Church,
This past Sunday, we heard the good news that true power lies in the way of the cross. God’s kingdom comes in power in ways that surprise us and, oftentimes, in ways we’d prefer to avoid altogether.
How can it be good news that the power of God’s Kingdom is found in the way of suffering?
To the powerless, the outsider, and the ones reeling from being sucker-punched by life — God’s Kingdom is closer to you than you would imagine. You might feel abandoned and the world might tell you that you’re left-out, but God has not abandoned you. You will not be left out of the Kingdom of God.
To the powerful, the self-reliant, and the would-be winners of today — Jesus is setting you free from a way of life hellbent on control. Power, control, and winning has pitted you against others in ways that you may not even be aware of. God’s kingdom has come to you today and you are invited to turn from the way of self toward the way of service.
Let us repent together of our misconceptions of greatness and say “yes” to Jesus’ invitation to serve others. Following the way of the cross we are called and equipped to pursue the mutual flourishing of all — not just ourselves.
Go in peace to love and serve the world,
Spencer+
