This year, starting March 9 at 9am (the first Sunday in Lent), our 6-week Lent class will be titled HOLY MYSTERIES: Re-learning the Essence of Christian Faith.
Use the buttons below to download the syllabus and join us online via Zoom, if needed:
Lent is traditionally a time to prepare for baptism by learning the core tenets and practices of Christianity. Many of us grew up with a version of Christian faith that doesn’t resonate or work for us anymore. However, moving on from those “old wineskins” often leaves a gap at the core of our understanding of what the gospel actually is, and what it really means to be a Christian.
For this class, we’ll use Rowan Williams’ 82-page book Being Christian: Baptism, Bible, Eucharist, Prayer to explore faith on the other side of deconstruction and disillusionment: What does baptism mean and do? How do we engage with the Scriptures? What are we doing together in the Eucharist? What is prayer and how can we actually practice it? What is going on in our liturgy on Sundays? Let’s go back and re-discover (for the first time?) the foundations of Christian faith together.
Nursery care will be available, and there will be a parallel kids class (K-5th grade) at the same time each Sunday morning that covers the same topics in a child-appropriate way (except March 23, which is Spring Break for most of our kids).
