Dear Church,
This past week we entered the season of Epiphany. Last Wednesday we held a prayer meeting on Zoom to care for each other and pray for the events surround the riots and insurrection at the Capitol in D.C.
This Sunday Fr. Ben preached on Jesus’ baptism, and called us to stand in the reality of the incarnation to be light to the world together.
Here is the prayer I wrote and read over us as we prepared to worship. I wrote it the evening of January 6th as we watched the events in Washington D.C. unfold. May we be empowered to see the King the Magi see.
Epiphany Prayer
Give us the King the Magi see
not the one who
cons religious leaders to dance a jig
for a share of the profits
and beheads prophets
and rounds up the infants
because they threaten his tyranny
Give us the King the Magi see
the one who’s forced from home
by unjust economic policies
only to flee again to a distant country
Give us the King the Magi see
not in approved scriptures
nor through gatekeeping authorities
but in the sky, in a country far far away
by pagan priests who listen to what creation speaks
Give us the King the Magi see
who will hang on the tree
and be enthroned
on Calvary
But today
Give us the King the Magi see
the one who sits on his mother’s knee
the one who wallows in poverty
who scares spit-less the powers that be
Give us the King the Magi see
In the Light of Christ, your Priest,
Fr. Matt
