Why do we bless candles every year at this time? February 2 is the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ, also known as Candlemas. It’s one of the oldest feasts of the Christian church, celebrated since the early 4th century, and a tradition developed of bringing candles to the local church to be blessed to be used for the rest of the year in prayer and personal devotion.
Since this is an annual tradition, you may want to bring enough candles to last you the rest of the year. If you’re looking for recommendations, Bolsius makes very good pillar candles. (Here’s a smaller pillar candle.)
